One aspect of Chinese culture that often goes unnoticed is the special relationship between the Chinese people and dogs. In this blog post, we will explore how this unique bond is portrayed in both books and documentaries. **Books:** Several books have been written that delve into the world of dogs in China, shedding light on the significance of these animals in Chinese society. One such book is "The Last Dogs of Shanghai" by Qiu Xiaolong, which tells the story of a group of stray dogs living in the streets of Shanghai amidst rapid urbanization. The novel explores the themes of loyalty, companionship, and resilience through the eyes of these resilient canines. Another notable book is "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle" by David Wroblewski, which follows the life of a mute boy and his extraordinary bond with a pack of dogs on a Wisconsin farm. While not set in China, the book highlights the universal nature of the human-dog relationship and the profound impact that these animals can have on our lives. **Documentaries:** Documentaries offer a visual and immersive experience that can provide a deeper understanding of the role of dogs in Chinese culture. One such documentary is "Pet Nation: China" produced by National Geographic, which explores the booming pet industry in China and the evolving attitudes towards dogs as more Chinese families embrace pet ownership. Another compelling documentary is "Dogs in the Land of Buddha" by filmmaker Zsofi Herendi, which follows the journey of Tibetan mastiffs, a revered breed in China, and their caretakers in the Himalayan region. The film showcases the deep spiritual and cultural connections between the Tibetan people and their beloved dogs, offering a glimpse into a world where canines are revered as sacred beings. **Conclusion:** Books and documentaries provide valuable insights into the intricate relationship between dogs and Chinese society.
